Professorship in Prehistoric Archaeobotany/Archaeozoology
The Department of Environmental Sciences at the Faculty of Science, University of Basel, invites applications for a professorship in Prehistoric Archaeology (open rank). We are seeking a candidate with a strong record of Archaeobotany/Archaeozoology in prehistoric times.
The new Professor and her/his research group will be expected to develop and strengthen research and teaching in archaeobiological sciences (archaeobotany and/or archaeozoology) within the Department of Environmental Sciences ( http://duw.unibas.ch ). We specifically seek candidates who have a proven record of combining archaeology with state-of-the-art bioarchaeometric (e.g., morphometric, isotopic and/or aDNA) analytical methods to study the role of animals/plants, agricultural practices, and general food-way strategies in prehistoric human communities. This includes topics such as domestication animals, animal husbandry, cultivation of crop plants, subsistence and farming strategies, transhumance, as well as studying possible links between environmental change and agronomic strategies with regard to their socio-cultural settings. The future professor is expected to teach both at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and to help expand and further develop the curriculum within the Archaeology BSc and MSc programs at our department, as well as to the interdepartemental MA in Archaeology and Archaeological Science. The engagement with colleagues at the University of Basel/Department of Environmental Sciences within the frame of other research and teaching programs is essential.
Applicants should hold a PhD in archaeobotany or archaeozoology or a related field, and have a proven track record of scholarly activities, a strong publication output and a history of externally funded research. Knowledge and experience of a range of techniques in the recovery, identification, and analysis of archaeobotanical and/or archaeozoological remains is a prerequisite. We particularly welcome applicants with a demonstrated ability to combine archaeological science with environmental sciences and socio-cultural archaeology.
